The FUT method is the old way of performing hair transplants as the large linear scar it leaves at the back of a male patient’s head is undesirable. This is why it’s mostly suitable for women and transgender hair transplants as the donor area doesn’t have to be shaven.
FUT vs. FUE
When deciding between a FUT or a FUE hair transplant, it’s not a question of preference but more of suitability. The FUT, or strip method, involves excising a strip of scalp skin from the donor area that is then dissected under magnification by our skilled technicians, which can preserve graft integrity and maximise yield in well-selected patients.
In comparison, FUE involves extracting individual follicles from the back of the head which leaves lots of tiny dot scars and requires the patient to shave their donor area.
FUT can be the better option for patients needing a high graft count in one session, with good scalp laxity and no intention of wearing very short hair. FUE is often preferable for those prioritising minimal visible scarring and faster social recovery.
The trade-off is unavoidable: FUT concentrates scarring into a linear line, FUE disperses it as thousands of micro-extraction dots. Any clinic presenting one method as “universally superior” is either oversimplifying or selling convenience, not outcomes.

What are the Advantages of FUT

FUT procedures can have a few advantages namely that they can have a larger graft count for recipient areas that are larger in surface area of hair loss. They also don’t require the patient to shave their donor area at all.
The drawback to this is that a linear scar is left behind, which is why this procedure is more targeted towards women. The other drawback is that the recovery time of FUT when comparing to FUE is longer as FUT is a more invasive procedure.
Cost of FUT
The cost of a FUT hair transplant is typically between £4,000 and £8,000. Smaller cases carry a smaller cost with larger cases being in the higher range of the price.
This is mainly because there are more technicians involved that have a different skillset than FUE. This skillset is the slivering (dissecting) of the strip of skin to extract all the grafts out. There are less and less technicians that have this skill as the FUE procedure is by far more popular.
Another reason for the increased cost is the equipment that is used is more when compared with FUE and more expensive, especially the microscopes that are required by the technicians to sliver the strip of skin.

Just like with the FUE procedure, the FUT procedure doesn’t hurt after the local anaesthetic is injected into the donor and recipient areas. The only difference is the recovery where the FUT may hurt slightly more in the few days/weeks post surgery and there is a feeling of tightness in the back of the head.
The FUT procedure is very similar in time as the FUE and typically lasts between 5-8 hours. Where the excision phase of the strip of skin is much quicker than the extraction phase of FUE, the time it takes to sliver and prepare the grafts in FUT takes some time. The implantation part of both procedures is the same.
Both FUT and FUE go through very similar stages of post hair transplant hair regrowth and so the final results for a FUT hair transplant take between 12-18 months to see.
You will experience the hair shedding phase post FUT hair transplant and then from around month 3 you should experience the first signs of growth with month 6 having much more visible results.
The one thing that does take longer to see the results is the healing of the linear strip at the back of the head as the wound is much larger and so will take longer to heal than the small FUE dots.
